A while ago I decided I wanted to write a series of stories focused around Harry and Draco solving Auror cases as partners, something I've used as the background of a lot of stories without making it central. This is the Cloak and Dagger series, and it would probably be a mixture of mystery, angst, and horror, with the romance low-key.

I have the titles of two main long stories- "Hero's Funeral" and "This Enchanted Life"- and I'd probably add shorter ficlets to it, too, that could stand more or less independent of the main storyline and leap back and forth in time. So this is background information for myself that I feel it's good to have worked out before the main stories begin. If you want to read it, this isn't anything that would spoil you for the series, though it gives away some of the things that will appear as character moments.

Name: Harry James Potter
Age: 29
Occupation: Auror, Socrates Corps
Auror Training: 1999-2002
Specialties: Tracking, defense, detecting lies, foresight (see below, under "Special Talents").
Weaknesses: Stealth, impulse control, examining crime scenes, idiosyncratic reaction to Dementors.
Wand: Holly, phoenix feather core.
Special Talents: Potter is subject to "visions" of a certain person's death. These sometimes aid in identifying victims, locating suspects, and preventing murders. As the visions can be changed, they are not 100% reliable. Potter is also paralyzed by these visions for up to five minutes at a time. All five senses are usually included, and the vision overlays Potter's normal surroundings. He has displayed no talents in witnessing crimes other than murder (i.e. torture, robbery, brewing of illegal potions). There is no known way of triggering or stimulating these visions.
Potter is widely known to be skilled at flying.
Notable Cases Worked: Ethan Blake case (captured Blake personally after a round of hand-to-hand combat), Lestrange case (tracking Rabastan and Rodolphus Lestrange after visions of subtle clues left in the bodies of their victims), Gina Kendricks case (his killing of the as-yet-unidentified shapeshifting wizard who took on the personalities and appearances of his victims, as well as displaying the ability to become an animal, earned him his promotion to the Socrates Corps).
Partners: Ron Weasley, Heliodorus Corps, 2002-2007 (ended with Auror Weasley's retirement); Lauren Hale, Heliodorus Corps, 2007-2008 (ended with "irreconcilable differences" and Auror Hale's request for reassignment); Lionel Vane, Aristotle Corps, 2008-2009 (Auror Vane died on the Gina Kendricks case). Current partner Draco Malfoy.
Personality: Very quiet, sharply reserved, prone to disrespect for authority and intense loyalty to his partners. Tendency to blame himself for failures and not accept credit for successes. Patterns of reaction consistent with emotional abuse in childhood.
Personal Life: Potter is closest to the Weasley family of pure-bloods and visits with them frequently, as well as with Madam Granger-Weasley, a barrister involved in the defense of magical creatures accused for crimes of the blood. Persistent rumors of a romantic relationship between Auror Potter and all his partners, as well as gossip of numerous other lovers, circulate. None have been confirmed.

Name: Draco Lucius Malfoy
Age: 29
Occupation: Auror, Socrates Corps
Auror Training: 2002-2005
Specialties: Concealment, disguise, potions, detection of Dark Arts (see below, under "Special Talents").
Weaknesses: Defensive magic, healing magic, ability to keep silent.
Wand: Hawthorn, unicorn hair core.
Special Talents: Malfoy bears the Dark Mark, which "resonates" with some magic used by the common prey of the Socrates Corps, wizards who have used enough Dark Arts to be described as irredeemably twisted. Malfoy has described this sensation as a twitching tingle in his left arm. While this ability does not function at every crime scene, it has led several times to the detection of hidden doors, cursed booby-traps, and/or dead or dying victims.
Malfoy is also an accomplished Occlumens and flyer.
Notable Cases Worked: Arethran case (prevented summoning of a demon), the Sussex Necromancer case (information an official secret, earned his promotion to the Socrates Corps).
Partners: Kellen Moonborn, Lucretius Corps, 2005-2009 (Auror Moonborn died on the Sussex Necromancer case). Current partner Harry Potter.
Personality: Abrasive, prickly, with a tendency to whinge when confined. Displays a sense of sometimes malicious humor. Frequent signs of insecurity. Best when under intense pressure.
Personal Life: Malfoy has close friends in the Damlan Werewolf Pack, one of two registered packs with Ministry permission to exist, and has in the past indicated ties to Blaise Zabini, the Parkinsons, and the Greengrasses, the last two both pure-blood families. He is known to have dated Daphne Greengrass and perhaps been engaged to her, but this liaison was broken off last year when Greengrass was arrested for the murder of Henry Thomas.

Socrates Corps

The most secretive corps in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, this group varies in size; as its smallest it has been three wizards, at its largest nineteen. Socrates Aurors work in the public eye on most occasions, during which they may assist and even partner with Aurors from other groups. When one of their primary targets is identified, however, a Socrates wizard must be prepared to abandon prior commitments and unite with his or her Socrates partner for immediate pursuit.

Socrates Corps is tasked with the elimination of the twisted, wizards whose minds and morals have been warped by Dark Arts to the extent that they can no longer be considered sane and pose a danger to others. The following five signs identify a twisted:

1. The target continually uses Dark Arts as offensive and defensive magic in battle, even when it would make greater tactical sense to use harmless spells such as the Summoning Charm, bindings, or disarming.
2. The target is unable to use healing magic. (Ministry Potions masters debate whether this deficiency also makes the twisted unable to brew healing potions, but as yet have uncovered no conclusive answer).
3. The target has a "flaw"--a single talent of wandless magic that it is believed the Dark Arts have empowered and encouraged in his or her mind. Past examples of such flaws have included: super-strength, the ability to hypnotize others by eye contact, transformation into a Dark magical creature, the summoning of Dark magical creatures, and the ability to travel across a room from one shadow to another.
4. The target has a companion or companions bound to and slavishly serving him or her. Common companions include: werewolves, vampires, wizards under Imperius, and family members who believe in the twisted absolutely. Twisted may work alone at first, but inevitably acquire companions.
5. The target has made up a personal symbol that he or she leaves behind as a signature, usually at the crime scene. This symbol may also appear on the bodies of companions.

The most powerful of modern twisted was Tom Riddle, who called himself Lord Voldemort. Because of the Ministry's inability to stop him, it was recommended after the war that a corps be formed with the specific task of eliminating the twisted before they reached such a stage. The mission of Socrates Corps, once the twisted has been carefully identified and there is no possibility of mistake, is to kill them.

A twisted wizard may be brought in alive if and only if the following five conditions have been met:

1. The capture of the twisted poses no risk to any member of the public.
2. The capture of the twisted poses no risk to the life of any Auror.
3. The twisted has been separated from his or her wand, and the wand broken or destroyed.
4. The arresting Auror is confident that the Ministry has the resources to hold the twisted and counter the flaw.
5. Any of the twisted's companions have already been captured and/or destroyed.
