Harry isn't really living for his friends- after all, he did lie to them and cut them out of a large part of his life- but he needs their love to live. And now he thinks he's lost it.
Harry has been under a lot of stress lately, and that probably did contribute to the breakdown. If he had been able to organize the confrontation the way he wanted, on his own ground and at his own pace, he would have done much better.
