Richard might have sacrificed himself if Harry had demanded it in just the right way. But he knew Harry would do the perfectly noble and idiotic thing and elect himself victim. That was one reason he removed the letters from the bases of the pillars, so Harry couldn't learn the incantation to make the maze on his own.
