I think Harry showing his memories is really the only thing that could have pulled Draco out of his exile. It interests him, in a way that just surviving the maze doesn't any more. And yes, Harry's an idiot.
You're right on the money with his selfishness, I think. Part of it's just stupidity. Part of it's fear; it's easier for him to sacrifice his life than confront feelings like his love for Draco. But a large part of it is simple innocence. He really doesn't believe that he's indispensable to anyone. Perhaps you could call that a legacy of his childhood, or a new wrinkle in his psychology since he defeated Voldemort. He did the one thing most necessary for him, the thing he was alive in the world to do, and since then he's felt more like he needs people than the other way around.
