I understand completely. There are a few stories I'm waiting on until completion because I don't want to wait on cliffhangers. Not that I'm not glad you took a chance!
I think at this point Draco's mental pain is close to beating out his physical pain. Harry is underestimating the length of time it will take him to recover.
The quest for immortality costs one's humanity.
That's an interesting way to phrase it. I wonder if someone in our own world would be willing to go as far for advanced gene therapy that slows aging, etc.?
Harry was hoping for a future that had children and a family specifically, but also for a future where he could look like everyone else. Now that's denied to him. I think that's what he's really fussing about. He can't be ordinary. Some people will always stare sideways at him and giggle.
Harry's major fear is that if he doesn't sacrifice himself, they never will escape the maze.
Huh. Interesting. I hadn't thought much of this story as a political commentary, just because it wasn't deliberate (I don't have a TV, which makes following the major news fairly difficult). But certainly something "in the air," as it were, might have influenced me.
Glad you think their flaws work. Draco, I think, comes out a little too dark at times, but then, the memories Harry is getting are awfully biased in their perspective.
Harry would probably not admit aloud yet that he could never share a bond like the one with Draco with Ginny...but he's getting there.
And thanks very much for the long and thoughtful comment!
