I can't really comment on what you're talking about, of course. :) Except to say that you may not be far off.
I used a snake once already in the story, and I want to avoid repeating that if I can. Otherwise, that would have made a good twist.
I'm so glad you liked that last line. I was grinning like an idiot when I wrote it.
