Harry was cursing in Parseltongue when he was agitated, without his potion. I wonder if it's the part of himself that is from Voldemort. The potential for evil in us all could be personified for Harry, hater of All Evil. And maybe that is why Hermione told him he was fine without it, that he is not evil! But he fears becoming evil and doesn't want to leave it to chance. Now that I think of it, most of the awful things that happened to people in his life were when they were sucker-punched--never saw it coming. Betrayal of parents by best friend Peter, Quirrel being a bad guy, Snape being a good guy, Dumbledore trying to save Draco and basically sacrificing himself, Cedric taking the cup in a moment of triumph, Sirius dying in surprise at the height of his feeling alive. Very little of the evil has been mutually agreed upon, honorable circumstances. Usually it sneaks up on them! Harry hates surprises. And he doesn't want to risk being surprised by his own potential for evil. Maybe....
Maybe...
