I probably won’t be able to update today, but I thought I’d do a quick post about bits of stories that I started writing and then, for one reason or another, quit on. They’re still sitting around on my computer, and I might even finish them at some point!

“All Desire in a Day”—This was born out of my desire to do a story where Harry is Sorted into Slytherin without writing a full-blown AU (I came as close as I ever will to that AU with Inter Vivos) or following the common clichés. In this story, Harry and Draco have been together several years, when Draco learns about what the Sorting Hat said to Harry from a casual remark. He uses a potion to create an intense dream for himself where he can see what would have happened if Harry had listened more to the Hat and allowed himself to become a Slytherin. The result is not at all what Draco expected.

Status: About 1200 words done. This is the most likely to get finished, because it has a tight plot and I know where I’m going.

“The Nightingale and the Kingfisher”—One-shot from Luna’s POV. Draco has been in love with Harry for years, but Harry won’t notice him. Draco is in so much pain from his unrequited love that he goes to Luna, who does magic of weird and mysterious kinds with the help of birds, and requests to have a large part of his memory erased. Everything seems to go smoothly until Harry shows up at Luna’s door…

Status: About 5000 words. I have no idea how long the finished product would be, in part because I don’t really know how I want it to end.

“Penance is the Play”—Draco is a good Auror. And also a loudmouth. He’s annoyed so many of his partners that no one will work with him anymore and Kingsley is getting ready to let him go. Draco’s last chance is to be Harry’s partner, since Kingsley thinks Harry can reform Draco if anyone can. Harry agrees, expecting Draco to last a week at the most, and then discovers that Draco behaves like a perfectly wonderful Auror around him, without insults. Bewildered, Harry sets out to discover what exactly happened with Draco’s previous partners, and whether the way he acted before or the way he’s acting now is the lie.

Status: 8000 words. I set it aside when I began writing “Starfire Nights.” I do like this one and want to finish it.

“Merciless”—Draco works as a private investigator, sending money regularly to his parents, who have been stripped of all their property and are living in France. Ginny Weasley comes to him with the news that Harry disappeared two months ago from an alley behind the Hog’s Head and she wants Draco to find him. Draco does discover what happened to Harry, quite easily, and sends reports to Ginny—who shows up to declare that she never hired him. From there, Draco gets swept into the mystery of what exactly is happening, and who exactly wanted him to find Harry and why.

Status: About 12,000 words. This was a fest-fic for [personal profile] hds_beltane that I had to scrap, because I could not find a way to make it fit the Beltane theme. I will probably work on it more later, but not until after the reveals in the fest, because if I posted it while the contributions were still anonymous, it would immediately be obvious which fic I had written. “Merciless” is not that fic, but it’s similar to it because I was using my recipient’s prompts for both of them.

“Travel Light”—Harry is studying for his Auror exams in a cottage deep in the middle of a forest, where he can be alone, when who should show up but Draco Malfoy. Draco explains that he’s under a curse that bounces him randomly from place to place; sometimes he stays two weeks, sometimes five minutes. The only commonality between the places is that he always arrives near someone he knows. The story follows Harry’s life being affected by Draco’s sudden, brief visits, and his eventual attempt to break the curse.

Status: About 8000 words. This is a fic that I originally started in an attempt to fulfill a request for “cursed Draco, bottom!Draco, protective!Harry.” It didn’t work because I knew there would be no sex scene, so it couldn’t really be bottom!Draco. I ended up writing “Siege Mentality” for that request instead. But I might pick this up if/when I have interest in writing a story this long. (To be effective, I think it would require at least 40,000 words).

“A Dim and Shining Brightness”—Here, have a summary: “Harry is somewhat surprised to recognize Draco Malfoy brooding in one corner of the Leaky Cauldron, but even more surprised to learn that he’s the only one who can. Malfoy is fading out of the world, slipping free of other people’s memories. And the quest to save him will teach Harry more than he cares to learn, and cost him more than he can imagine.” What it says on the tin. Draco has been cursed so that other people simply ignore or cannot sense his presence, even his mother. Harry can see him because he’s under a modified version of the same curse that Hermione created for him, one that will let him interact with others but cause them not to realize that he’s Harry Potter, so he can escape his fame. There seems to be no way to break the curse on Draco, but this is Harry; of course he’ll find a way.

Status: 2000 words. Another fic where I was trying to write to the same request as above, and again frustrated by the fact that I didn’t think there would be a sex scene. As to whether it would be continued, we’ll see.
