And I know the feeling. Alas, I seem luckier in writing fic than finding fic like that; I know a few authors who update often, but only one of them writes fic I really like (and that one's actually gen, not slash).
Some people are happiest when they have canon to follow. I'm happiest when I have a little wriggle room to stick bits of non-canon knowledge in (things that are probably not true, but might be).
