I think if JKR had made Dumbledore tell Harry that he had to die earlier, it wouldn't have fit into his original plan. The differance is that in this fic Dumbledore plan is to destroy the Horcruxes himself and then kill Voldemort. In canon Dumbledore was dying and he intended for Harry to carry out the job of destroying the Horcruxes, in fact he said to Snape that Harry had to be told only after he had destroyed all the other Horcruxes. I think this Dumbledore is very in character: he isn't neither more cruel or more compassionate than canon Dumbledore, he just has a different plan, am I right?
