Harry had to do it in a nasty way. I wanted to show that he's not as innocent as he's usually portrayed in this fic, and has no real problem killing Bellatrix that way (though, of course, he didn't know what the spell would do when he first cast it).
And no problem! I can see why you might not have thought Severitus was a good idea; there are so many of them around.
