I think Draco would be a very hard person to change, because in the books he really does ignore a lot of chances to not do stupid shit. (He joins Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad when he must have seen that she wouldn't last long, for example. And if he didn't see that she wouldn't last, that's yet another problem). Only when he's got choices pressing in on him from all sides and he stands to lose something else if he doesn't comply will he change.
Harry sees his change of heart as an ultimatum. He wants one more chance because he thinks it was his fault (partially) for walking away years ago. (You may have noticed that he refers to it as "the time I walked away from Draco" more than "the time Draco broke up with me"). But if Draco refuses to accept him unconditionally no matter what the healing spells they find, then Harry will walk away with a clear conscience.
