The Malfoys stop dissecting gestures as much behind the walls of their home. But in public, they feel the need to be discerning at pretty much every moment.
Lucius would have spun a convincing 'father figure' tale for Harry, playing on his insecurities and weaknesses as far as family goes. He would have said his feelings were more advanced than they really are in order to charm Harry into Malfoy Manor. It's not a lie, exactly; with Harry in his home, Lucius's feelings would have more of a chance to increase.
Glad you liked her perspective! And yes, she'll approve of Harry not surrendering so easily. She's not as sure as Lucius and Draco that he'll fit into the family just as he is.
