In this case, I wanted to show what effect Diggory could have on someone who wasn't Harry or Draco. He really is intimidating, clever, and strong. But Kingsley was exaggerating the effect and becoming more fatalistic than was warranted.
Oh, yes. Harry didn't know how much good his efforts would do, but he wouldn't just sit back and take it.
That's pretty much what I'm going to do. I also don't like bait-and-switch endings (twist endings work best in short stories, I think, unless the twist is just a counterpoint to a minor subplot and not the whole plot of the novel). And, of course, there will be a bit more on Draco getting over/showing his memories of torture under Daphne.
Sorry if you thought that! The arranged feeling was meant to show that Diggory and his cronies have planned for many things- but not for everything. Without Skeeter there, and with a week or more so to plan things, they would have brought their plan off much more smoothly. As it was, Diggory moved fast to bring the trial forwards a week when he thought it likely Draco had evidence of his attack on him, so they had to scramble to put things together.
And don't worry about it! Keeping track of multiple WiP's is a task from the reader's perspective as well as the writer's.
