The sad thing is, if Harry had managed to lose his temper once in public, the requests probably would have died down. But there would have been a backlash of anger and disappointment from that, too, and Harry simply couldn't face it.
Hermione and Ron don't understand that about Draco and Harry's relationship yet, or I'm sure they would have supported them as a couple more openly.
In this case, Hermione isn't trying to make it all about her consciously, but she does think she's seeing objective reality, while Harry is trapped in a limited and "sick" perspective.
