The competitive edge is more pronounced here than in most of their other relationships in my stories, but luckily they had someone else to compete against!

Oh, believe me, Harry was smacking his head for not figuring it out earlier. On the other hand, neither did McGonagall or Remus, and they were the Headmistress and the Gryffindor Head of House respectively.

I don't think Rivers and Huntington-Smythe meant to do that; more likely they didn't think at all. And often that's worse than calculated cruelty.

I can just see Severus asking Draco to keep Harry in bed for one entire weekend so his potion has a chance. Thank you for that very funny image. :)
