I think it did go well. Harry's accepted that he can't control the situation, and he'll simply have to go ahead and tough it out.
Harry is definitely protecting himself- but Nusante's caught in a situation where he thinks that protecting oneself has to take a back seat to sacrifice. Harry defending himself for ten or twelve years is a blow to him. He can't comprehend having a stake in this fight and ignoring it.
If Draco had heard that letter, he would be having a talk with both Nusante, for sending it, and Harry, for partially agreeing with it.
Draco is worried about the speed of Harry's change. He thinks it could be false, and he could collapse.
