Re: AMWM 11 (aka Mummy Dearest goes Psycho)

I thoroughly enjoyed Harry's introspection while incarcerated. His maudlin questioning: "Does that mean I had to lose one of them for the other to come into my life? Would I always have had to make that choice?" struck a chord because in so many ways it does seem like it would have always been an either/or situation with Ron and Draco (despite fandom to the contrary). And this just cracked me up: "Even his conscience sounded like Draco now, Harry thought, when it didn’t sound like Hermione." And ultimately how loving Draco was the most important change he had undergone.

Poor Hunter, he really didn't stand a chance, did he? And Draco's running color commentary was splendidly comic.

Now that I look back on it, I wonder if the incarceration wasn't some sort of set up. While the new trio is off doing a fool's errand (so to speak, by trying to get Harry out of jail) Narcissa was free to meddle in her way. I'm somewhat shocked that she was so easily able to penetrate the Ministry and gain access to Harry's cell. I mean wouldn't it be monitored to ensure no one visited, granted it is a more muggle idea, but it seems high profile detainees would be under constant surveillance and not just some susceptible flunkies laying about.

The fact that Narcissa places a higher priority on Draco's magic than his life is baffling to me, but perhaps it is supposed to be. I can't believe she came into to the cell without an exit strategy and a means to ensure that Draco did not find out what she had done (Slytherin to the core, unless she's cracking).

I do appreciate how you forced me to scour the net searching for a viable translation of the spell she used. It is clear that the aeternum portion is eternal or everlasting. There are however, many possibilities for Duco that could fit:

to draw, shape, construct/ (time) spend, delay.
to calculate, count, reckon, esteem, considered.
to lead on the march, marry a wife, command.
to lead, draw, esteem, consider.
to charm, influence, mislead, draw in.

I will keep my own counsel at this point, if only to prevent embarrassment at how wrong I was about both the translation and its effect. But I do wonder if somehow the Desire potion just might be able to counteract whatever effects the spell had? THough I suspect nothing will alleviate the pain Harry is currently experiencing. The tactic of removing Harry seems an interesting choice, but unless the Malfoys believe that Draco is going to be blackmailed into returning to the fold by extorting compliance for a cure for Harry, I'm not sure this is going to work.

A wonderful dramatic and twisting adventure continues and my gratitude has no bounds!
