Being loved is as important to Harry as it's ever been; it's the "being loved for himself" part that makes him tense up. He really believes the inner him has nothing to offer anyone, so even with Ron and Hermione he wears a mask. And I would say that fear of the loss of his freedom is right up there as a reason for maintaining the mask, along with not wanting to disappoint people.
