And yes, Draco really does appreciate the more Slytherin traits. He thinks they would be excellent ones in someone who would have to be as involved in as much of his life as Harry would.
I'm glad you like the explanation of pure-blood culture. I actually do like some of the fanon conceptions (like their expressing emotion less), but I agree that they mostly don't receive explanation. I'm trying to explain it here, even though I'm mocking it at the same time.
And even "ancient traditions" often aren't all that ancient; conceptions of sex and gender in the US, I know, changed quite a few times during the twentieth century.
