I wanted someone who was more of a well-intentioned extremist than a madman like Voldemort. Of course, Richard is mad, but it's more a matter of degree than of kind. Wanting to improve people's health and extend their lifespans is not inherently immoral.

That's one reason Harry doesn't want to get so close: he's convinced he will die.
