Oh. Oh. Is this why all the references Hermione could find had the sufferers staying with their spouses instead of giving in to the life debts? Because all the history of the conflict is left behind in the "original" world, so to speak, so from their point of view, what happens is that the life debts are "less powerful" than the marriage vows?
