Progress Report 5/23

Not many new ideas this time, but some solid ones that I’m looking forward to writing.

Inter Vivos- Two more chapter parts to be written, though one will be a fairly lengthy epilogue. The second-to-last part of Chapter 30 will be posted tomorrow. I will be glad to see this one end; I feel as though I didn’t accomplish everything I wanted with it.

“Viper”- I know exactly how this story is going to end now, and I’m very pleased with it. Part 7 will be up on Monday.

Their Phoenix- Also pleased with this one; I think I’m finally beginning to pull the characters’ relationships in a productive direction.

“Of Dubious Value”- This will be a medium-length one-shot, of probably 16,000 words, with 4000 written now. It is a happy, funny story.

“At Fate’s Mercy”: (I am not entirely happy about this title, but I have not yet gotten a better one).

Harry is married to Ginny, and it’s just after Lily’s birth. He’s as happy as can be, when another prophecy comes along: the world is doomed if he doesn’t give up his family. Harry tries to ignore this prophecy for a while, but bad things start happening. In the end Ginny shows so much unhappiness that Harry divorces her and lets her marry another man she truly loves, while his children grow up calling that man Dad. Harry leaves Britain for a little while because this hurts so much.

Then a second prophecy comes along. This time, it says that the world is doomed if Harry doesn’t give up his friendship with Draco Malfoy. But Harry’s never had a friendship with Malfoy at all. Baffled, he decides that the only way to fulfill the prophecy is to create a friendship with him and then sacrifice it. But sometimes things don’t work out the obvious way. Including prophecies.

“Executioner’s Summer”: Post-war, and a fairly dark fic. Every one of the Death Eaters is being condemned to the Dementor’s Kiss, because each time evidence turns up at the trial that shows they did much worse things than what they were initially accused of. Combine that with the unseasonal heat wave, and tempers are on edge, with people not involved in the war fearing they might be accused. Harry watches Draco’s trial from a distance, unsure if Draco will be sentenced to the Kiss—and what he’ll do if that happens.

“Leader of Men”: A definite dark fic, set in a future where the Dementors have gone on breeding after the war instead of returning to captivity. Harry leads a group of people, mostly former Aurors and Death Eaters–since they know the most about Dark magic—who are trying to reduce the plague of Dementors before they can destroy humankind. Harry deliberately and coldly does what he must to survive, including taking his sexual tension out with Draco. This would be a pretty tight and spare story, probably the first in a series of linked one-shots set in the Dementors’ Future universe.

“Corybantes”: Harry is called in to investigate a very strange death in Draco’s club, Corybantes, which specializes in giving people their deepest desires (usually but not always sexual). This is a locked-room mystery; the victim died with his throat cut in one of the club’s private chambers, where his only companions would have been his own fantasies. Draco insists that no one else could get in or out, and that the fantasies cannot inflict lasting physical harm. Harry finds threatening letters and images of people with slit throats among the victim’s papers, which increase his suspicions. Someone is lying, and Harry is becoming increasingly afraid that it’s Draco—afraid, because he admires Draco for being unafraid and unashamed of what he’s doing.

“Because Potter Is Allergic to Poppies”: A more light-hearted fic, you will be glad to note, though it also involves a murder attempt. Harry is recovering from a hard case in St. Mungo’s when someone tries to kill him. Draco is a junior Healer without much hope of advancement; they let him into the program because they always need someone to do the menial labor, but they won’t forget about his past. He thinks that he can spare the hospital’s reputation and improve his own if he just finds out who tried to kill Harry. In a hospital with hundreds of potentially fatal potions and spells, and hundreds of people in and out each day. Wish him good luck. He’ll need it.
