The heaviest and hardest lesson I had to learn for writing, and am still learning to date: never write for anyone else but yourself. I think that's one of the most valuable (and one of the hardest) lessons a greenhorn writer has to learn, really. To write because you want to write, and not because you want people to see you write. If the writer is stumbling over the plot because of fear of losing readership, then IMO, that writer is missing the point -- and ruining the story. Bad.
