Draco came very near to realizing how pathetic he is/was, when he thought that taking revenge would cause him to lose his dignity. On the other hand, he saw himself becoming even more pathetic if he didn't take it, because he would just turn (he thought) into Harry Potter's Gryffindor-like love slave. He wanted to prove that he was the strong one, the in-control one.

Desires like that do more harm than anything, really.

The themes of this story (behind obsession, obviously) are betrayal and sacrifice and forgiveness, so yes, Draco will try for Harry's forgiveness. Whether he ever deserves it is another matter.
