I know what you mean. :) Lucius is in the story in part as a counterpoint to Harry and Draco's story, another side of obsession, but he also literally helps balance them.

Harry and Draco can, I think, both be understood as pig-headed stubborn fools who will need a large crash to wake them up from their delusions.
