Harry is capable of an awful lot, even in the books, that he doesn't think himself capable of. I do think he could rise to the occasion. But there's not much reason for him to do so when his family and friends don't demand such things from him.
Yes. One of the ways that Harry separates himself from her and learns to stand on his own is looking at the wider world instead of remaining within St. Mungo's all the time.
