Draco may understand Harry on a subconscious level, but admitting that understanding aloud would hurt his own pride too badly.

And yes, it's a contradiction for him to think Harry is worthless but also want to defeat him. Mostly he ignores this.

It's a happy ending, but you get there through a lot of angst.
