Yes, fear is the mind-killer (hello, I have read too much Dune) of the wizarding world. I mean, look at the panic in Hogwarts when people realized Harry was a Parselmouth. No real reason to be afraid of him, and he'd saved them once before, but it got entirely out of hand in panicked rumors.

I also would be inclined to try and squash a beetle. I admire Harry's self-control.

That's what Harry thinks Diggory is doing. The others see their colleagues' growing fear, and that increases their dread of what they'll see in the Pensieve. It's like going into a room that several people have already run out of screaming.
