I think Rita might have mellowed with the years. And she was genuinely interested in Harry during the Triwizard Tournament; she reported a few stories that attacked Hermione instead of him, for example.

I'd say the Quill probably takes down the literal words but twists them or cuts them off, the way some shabby newspapers sometimes do.

Draco's customer was trying to embarrass him by referring to Harry, or make him uncomfortable, at least. Draco had already prepared for that and refused to let it happen.

And thanks! I always have trouble writing Ron and Hermione, so it probably helped that here I'm drawing on a very different set of circumstances.
